Women's breasts go through many changes during a lifetime, be it weight loss, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. As the skin loses some of its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. Ptosis is a medical term for breasts that appear droopy and less full than normal. Breast lift or mastopexy is a procedure performed to raise and reshape sagging breasts, returning them to a more youthful appearance.

There are three types of procedures used to treat ptosis. The procedure utilized to correct ptosis depends on the degree of sag and the volume of breast tissue you have. Breast lift can be combined with breast augmentation to improve the shape as well as increase the size of your breasts.  Breast lift can be combined with breast augmentation to improve the shape as well as increase the size of your breasts.

For women with smaller breasts and minimal sag, an augmentation procedure may be all that is necessary. By adding fullness and volume to the breast, the skin is filled out making the breast appear fuller and more youthful. Breast augmentation does not truly lift the breast. The biggest advantage of breast augmentation is that it avoids a visible scar.

Age: 29
Procedure: Mastopexy Combined with Breast Augmentation and Mini Tummy Tuck
Implants: 150cc High Profile silicone gel breast implant
Placement: Under the Muscle
Cup Size : 36A/B to 36-C

This woman is a beautiful 29-year-old mother of three children.  Following her last pregnancy, she lost breast volume and is bothered by her sagging breasts.  She is also bothered by excess skin in her lower abdomen.  She exercises regularly amd takes good care of herself.

Because of her degree of breast ptosis or sag, she is a candidate for silicone gel breast implants.  She had a breast lift combined with 150 cc silicone gel breast implant placed beneath the muscle.  The operation resulted in a beautiful lift to her breast, and restored her breast volume.  She also underwent a mini tummy tuck at the same surgery.  She has a beautiful shape to her breasts and her abdomen is nice and flat.  She is thrilled with her results (see patient's testimonials):

Age: 46
Procedure: Mastopexy Combined with Breast Augmentation
Implants: 275cc smooth high profile silicone gel breast implants
Placement: Under the Muscle
Cup Size : 36A/B to 36C

This patient is a very attractive 46-year-old woman. She had nearly C-cup breasts prior to breast-feeding. Her breasts lost volume and the nipple position dropped over the past several years. She wanted to return to a C-cup and improve her breast shape. She had a breast lift combined with breast augmentation with 275 cc silicone gel breast implants placed beneath the muscle. She is thrilled with her new breast shape (see patient’s testimonials).

For women with intermediate ptosis (sag), where the nipple is still above the inframammary fold (the fold where the breast meets the chest), a nice option is the periareolar breast lift combined with implants. The major advantage of this procedure is that the scar is well hidden at the junction of the areola and breast skin. It avoids the vertical and inframammary fold scars seen in a typical breast lift.

In the past, the main disadvantage of this technique was the tendency for the areola to enlarge with time. Recent modifications in the technique, which I learned from Larry Schlesinger, M.D., Maui, Hawaii, have solved this problem. The use of a Gore-Tex suture avoids the tendency for the areola to enlarge.

Age: 32
Procedure: Periareolar Breast Lift with Implants
Implants: 350cc round high profile saline
Placement: Under the muscle
Cup Size : Large B to Small D

This beautiful 32 year old nurse and mother of three is an ideal candidate for the procedure. She has attractive breasts with moderate ptosis (sag). Following periareolar breast lift with 350cc round implants below the muscle she has a beautiful breast shape and barely noticeable scars.

Age: 40
Procedure: Breast Lift: Reshaping & Lifting Breast Tissue She Has

This 40-year-old mother of four wished to have the breast shape she had prior to her pregnancies. She was also bothered by fat accumulation in her abdomen, flanks and thighs. Since she had adequate breast volume, a breast lift was chosen to reshape her own breast tissue. Liposuction was used to remove stubborn tummy, back and thigh fat. The result is a fuller, prettier breast shape, flatter tummy and narrower waistline and hips.

What do I need to know about pregnancy and Breast Lift?
If you are planning to have more children, it may be a good idea to postpone your breast lift. Pregnancy is likely to stretch your breasts again and offset the results of the procedure. Mastopexy usually does not interfere with breast-feeding, and should a woman choose to have a child after a breast lift she can breast-feed. However, the shape of the breast may change following the pregnancy.
