Having large breast can lead to back and neck pain, and grooves in the shoulders from bra straps. Some large breasted women also express embarrassment about their breast size and tell us it is difficult for them to participate in athletic activities. They often find it difficult and expensive to find clothes that fit.

Breast reduction is a procedure with very high patient acceptance and satisfaction. This is because it offers resolution of the functional and aesthetic problems associated with large breasts. Reduction techniques developed in the 1990s have resulted in a number of significant advantages for the woman contemplating breast reduction.

Newer techniques have enabled more women to maintain erogenous sensatio
n to the nipple-areolar complex and produce far less scarring than older techniques. An added benefit for the young woman desiring smaller breasts is improved potential for breast-feeding offered with newer techniques. Following surgery, women say they feel more comfortable with their bodies and are able to lead more active lives.

This patient was pleased with her new figure. She successfully breast fed her twins one year following her breast reduction surgery.

The procedure has five major goals:

Reducing the size of the breasts
Creating nicely shaped breasts
Reducing the size of the nipple-areola and raising it to a normal position
Maintaining erogenous sensation to the nipple-areolar complex
Preserving enough breast gland behind the nipple to allow for potential lactation

Breast reduction can correct breast asymmetry. This patient is a 50 year old woman who had right breast cancer treated by lumpectomy and radiation therapy. The radiation caused fibrosis and shrinkage of the right breast. She was troubled by the fact that her left breast was larger than her right. This caused her a good deal of problems finding bras, swimming suits and clothing that fit. A left breast reduction was performed for this patient.

Women with large breasts are often unable to engage in the types of vigorous exercise that leads to stable body weight, such as running or aerobics. This patient was bothered by her large breasts and the tummy fat that she had had since her teen years. A combination of breast reduction and liposuction has given her a shapely new figure. Body contour surgery has enabled her to maintain an exercise routine and ideal body weight.

Some girls experience substantial breast growth in their teens. This is occurring at a time when any adolescent woman is struggling with their transition to young womanhood. These teenage girls and their parents find that the physical develpment of the girls large breasts have far outpaced their psychological development. It is diificult for these girls to cope with their body image at a time when all teenagers struggle for acceptance and identity. These young women are often not prepared for the type of attention they receive, they want to be considered normal and to fit in with their friends. They have problems finding properly fitting clothes. Athletic activities are hampered by their large breasts.

Teenage breast reduction patients want their breasts to be "normal" in size. This usually means a B or C cup breast. They want breasts that are in proportion to their bodies. The teenage patient is a good candidate for breast reduction as she quickly incorporates her smaller breasts into her body image. Athletic activities such as running and aerobics are far more enjoyable following the procedure.
