Minneapolis Facelift: The Second Time’s A Charm!

Published on March 22, 2013 by

It turns out that not all second helpings are bad for you. A recent report published in the March issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery reveals that a “secondary facelift” could actually produce long lasting results with lower complication rates than the initial face procedure done. When it comes to your Minneapolis facelift, it doesn’t really matter whether it’s your first, second or third, the results are always long-lasting, safe and complication-free.

The Second Time’s A Charm
The 20-year study by Dr. Rod J. Rohrich and his colleagues at the University of Southwestern Medical Center concluded that “secondary rhytidectomy is a safe and effective procedure for continued surgical facial rejuvenation in the aging patient.” The study covered 60 of Dr. Rohrich’s 800 patients who had facelift between 1990 and 2010 — 60 of them had secondary facelifts. Here’s an excerpt of the press release:

The experience included 57 women and three men undergoing secondary rhytidectomy. The patients averaged 51 years of age at the time of their initial facelift and 60 years at their secondary facelift. Thus for these patients, the results of the initial facelift lasted an average of nine years.

Of the 60 patients undergoing a second facelift, 10 later underwent a third facelift procedure. The time between the second and third procedures was 7.5 years-suggesting that the results of the secondary facelift lasted about as long as those of the initial procedure.

Adherence to Unique Surgical Techniques
The researchers emphasized the importance of unique surgical techniques to ensure the success of secondary facelift procedures. Dr. Rohrich and his team stated, “adherence to the five R’s of secondary rhytidectomy (resect, release, reshape, refill and redrape) will enable the plastic surgeon to safely restore youth and correct stigmata of primary facelift.”

Ideally, a facelift procedure is indicated for the following:

  • prominence of facial jowls
  • mild to moderate wrinkling of facial skin
  • laxity of facial and neck skin
  • overall tired and aged look
